Dorkbot Melbourne 19: 29 June 2008
We meet at 4pm, on Level 1, 124a Johnston St Fitzroy 3065 (just east of Brunswick St).
The programme for February Dorkbot is still taking shape but we have:
Gestural Control for Computer Music Performance
(or some fun monome hacks) Mark Pedersen - Chailight Productions sound/instrument design
Mark will demo his application of a mildly hacked monome to gestural control of music performance using parameter interpolation for timbral control and spatialisation. The discussion will cover the idea of building user-configurable intention maps presented at ICOMCS as well as the challenges of applying gestural control for live surround-sound performance. Also on show will be work in progress on an RGB monome-like button pad inspired by [ http://www.upwardnotnorthward.com ] ... and there'll be lots of blinking lights.

eidosand ::: nonverbal communication in MultiUser Virtual Environments
Troy Innocent / Stewart Haines
In this project, methods for nonverbal communication in digital games and virtual worlds are explored as alternatives to chat and other text-based forms of communication. Inspired by pre-liguistic societies and pictographic languages, the design of a new system called ‘symbolchat’ for virtual worlds has been developed. An online game is developed that uses this system at various levels in the game world. Reflecting upon the design and development of this system, and observation of it in use by players the application and role of nonverbal communication in digital games and virtual worlds is explored.
In the game, players are encouraged to engage in free play with an abstract environment constructed from image and sound. Via this MultiUser Virtual Environment, play with the interface and world via its unique audiovisual syntax allows the exploration of alternative modes of communication within electronic spaces.
